Fall cleanup isn’t glamorous, but it’s one of the best things you can do for your yard. A little work now means a healthier lawn and cleaner beds in the spring, and a house that looks great all winter.

Here’s a checklist for your own fall cleanup:

1. Clear the leaves.

A thick layer of wet leaves can smother your lawn over the winter. Rake them, mulch them with your mower, or bag them. Just do not let them sit.

2. Cut back spent plants.

Trim back perennials that have finished blooming and pull out the dead annuals. It tidies the beds and cuts down on pests and disease.

3. Trim shrubs where needed.

Remove dead or damaged branches now. Hold off on heavy pruning of spring bloomers, since cutting them in fall can remove next year’s flowers.

4. Plant bulbs, trees, and shrubs.

Fall is a great time to get things in the ground if it’s not too cold. The cooler weather is easier on new plants, and the roots get established before spring.

5. Do a final mow, then get your equipment ready for winter.

Cut the lawn one last time and drain your hoses. Before you put the mower away you can do some simple maintenance. Sharpen the blade, change the oil, and check the battery, so it starts on the first pull in spring. Doing it now saves you a frustrating April afternoon.
